As I put together my bike expedition, I really appreciated the gear lists other cycling tourists posted. They really helped plan what I’d take on my trip. I’m sure my gear list will evolve as I’m on the road, but so far, here is what I intend to take. Please comment or ask questions and I’ll do my best to answer.
Bike Stuff
Bike - Surly Big Dummy cargo bike (named YAWP!) - This is a seriously cool bike. I went with a cargo bike instead of a regular touring cycle because a) I wanted the freedom to be able to easily carry large loads and b) I didn’t want the disadvantages of a trailer (poor handling, non-standard parts, breakage)
Racks - XtraCycle FreeLoaders + Snapdeck
Dry Bags – 2 Seattle Sports Roll Top Duffels that fit inside the FreeLoaders - medium size.
U-Lock & Cable lock plus a Pacsafe wire mesh to go around my duffel bags (Not taking this on the US portion of the trip. Don’t think I’ll need it)
Lights - Light & Motion Stella 200L Black Diamond Wiz as a small backup headlamp.
Bike Computer - basic wired model
Helmet - Standard Bell helmet w/ visor
Tools & Spares
Small bike pump that works with both Schrader & Presta valves
Multi-tool with most allen & standard sizes plus a chain-breaker
Nashbar basic socket set - I needed a wrench to work with my bottom bracket tool, and I’ve heard good things about this set from other touring cyclists. It’s a bit heavy, but I think it’ll work out well.
BB tool that works with socket wrench
Spoke wrench for DT Swiss spokes
4 spare spokes in correct sizes - this was probably the biggest pain to figure out. My wheels are built using both Surly and Shimano hubs and Surly did not return my calls asking for specs. I finally called the QBP (US bike distributor) and the awesome CSR helped me calculate my spoke lengths. Phew.
Fiberfix Kevlar spoke - emergency spoke so I can avoid a lengthy roadside repair. It can be used on any wheel for spoke lengths up to 300mm. I can put it on and then properly replace the spoke at camp.
2 cone wrenches
2 flat kits
2 SRAM Gold PowerLinks plus a few links of chain
Brake & Derailleur cable
Zip ties
Baling wire
Duct Tape
Sewing Kit & fishing line
Tent/Sleeping Pad patch kit
Camping Stuff
REI Quarterdome T2 Tent
15 degree Marmot synthetic sleeping bag
REI 1.5 inch compact inflatable sleeping pad - I may end up switching this out for a plain foam model. I hate the foam ones, but they are really durable.
MSR Whisperlite Stove
2 1 liter MSR fuel bottles
Pans + Utensils - standard mess kit with 1 qt pot, frying pan, wooden spatula, spork + mug.
Leatherman Squirt
Assorted stuff sacks and dry bags
Compass
MSR 6 Liter Dromedary bladder - this will let me fill up during the day and give me more flexibility in camp sites for the night.
Collapsible camp bucket
Electronics
MSI Wind U100 netbook with extra 9-cell battery - I’ll use this to blog from the road and to Skype with friends and family. So far, so good. Super light. Cramped keyboard.
4G nano iPod with crappy, taped headphones.
Canon Powershot with 5G of memory cards
Basic cell phone with 3 spare batteries. I will buy a pay-as-you-go phone when I get outside the US.
Clothing
2 pair padded cycling shorts
1 pair capris, 1 pair zip-off pants
2 pair short sleeve cycling jerseys
Cycling gloves
2 long sleeve wool undertops, 1 fun t-shirt
Buff headscarf,light underwear, socks
Fleece jacket
Waterproof jacket + pants
cycling shoes/light hikers, Keene Sandals, flipflops
Personal Gear
Money, cards, passport, updated glasses prescription, insurance information, vaccination certificate + photocopies, emergency contact information
Money belt
Sunglasses - serfas multi lenses + prescription shades
Toiletries, sunscreen, wet wipes, sewing kit
Towel - MSR ultralight
Maps - general highway maps. I’ve decided against going with the more specialized Adventure Cycling maps since they trade excellent detail for a single route. I’d rather plan my own and have the flexibility of deviating when necessary.
Books - some light reading I’ll pick up and trade along the way, maybe a climbing guide
Notebook and pens
Alarm clock
Daypack - for day hikes and to carry a hydration pack underway.
Medical Gear
Personal first aid kit - bandages, gauze, anti-wipes, tweezers, prescription painkillers (in case I get a kidney stone attack), antibiotics, Immodium
Spare contact lenses + solution
Mosquito repellant
